The smells of cakes, cookies, brownies, chocolate-dipped strawberries and other sweet delicacies mingle with determination and hard work as shop owner Ryan Young prepares to work on a new order.
The store, affectionately named Yummy Tummy Pastries, opened near the heart of Humble in June and has been busy filling orders ever since. Young and his partner/girlfriend, Letty Martinez, operate the store together.
When the bakery first opened, Yummy Tummy Pastries was in a much smaller shop, but within a few months the duo was able to expand to a larger storefront, complete with tables and a display case. The overwhelming demand has led them to consider expanding the pastry offering to include breakfast kolaches and muffins.
“Martinez and I first met when we were both working at The Woodlands Resort and we specialized in making cakes,” Young said. “We eventually got so busy we decided we wanted to open our own shop, but we had no clue where to begin.”
Young and Martinez researched several different shopping centers and storefronts along FM 1960 before Martinez asked the owner of the building of their current location if she could work for her business part time.
“The lady said sure and then asked if we would like to buy. We jumped at the chance,” Young added.
They moved into the business located on First Street near the intersection of North Houston Avenue and got to work, painting, decorating and filling cake orders. Yummy Tummy Pastries is best known for its strawberry shortcake and tres leches as well as other desserts. Young and Martinez also offer monthly birthday cakes for offices, cake matching with photos of cakes the customer wishes to duplicate and fondant cakes.
“We also have a unique service which is the bananas foster flambé table which businesses and families can use for their holiday parties or get-togethers,” Young said.
Besides working at The Woodlands Resort, Young has worked in several different countries such as Germany and areas like the Middle East and the Caribbean. He has also worked with Aramark in the Minute Maid Owners’ Suite and several other companies.
The unique name for the shop was developed by Martinez’ children who wanted to give the shop a cute name most people would remember. Yummy Tummy Pastries also offers several of its cake selections by the slice, cupcakes and smaller selections such as cookies and tarts. With the addition of breakfast kolaches and other breakfast items, the bakery will have earlier hours: Monday through Saturday at 6 a.m.
“The business has become a family affair, so we are excited to bring a quality bakery back to the Humble area,” Young said. “We know what we are doing and want people from around the community to know we are here.”
Yummy Tummy Pastries is located at 1005 First Street in Humble, one mile east of U.S. Highway 59 near North Houston Avenue.
